Hey Kit Eaton here, I'll be here tomorrow to comment on the news as Apple reveals it to us. But for now, here's the low down on what we expect to happen: Apple Rumor Patrol. In short, we're looking at the new top-range iPhone 5S, a colorful plastic iPhone 5C, iOS 7, and OS X Mavericks -- and, just possibly, some new Macs and maybe more!

By now, we all know the iPhone 5C that will come in different colors. But why does Apple release products in more colors? Steve Jobs was bummed by the original blue iMac, even though it was a huge success. -
-
The iPhone 5S will be the new flagship. The S is rumored to stand for "security." That's because of its key new feature, a thumbprint sensor.
-
But the iPhone 5S may be interesting for reasons beyond the fact that you won't have to enter a PIN to lock your phone.
-
If you think about fingerprints, they're really like nature's ID. If Apple gets into fingerprint tech--as it seems they have--it could have major implications for retail payments and all other sorts of services that sync you with the cloud.
-
In the iPhone 5C will be the new budget-friendly addition to the iPhone line. The C will stand for "color."
-
Meanwhile, over on PopSci, Dan Nosowitz is live-blogging the Apple event on his "busted-ass iPhone 4S", for those of you with similarly cracked and abused devices. -
What about new iPads, Kit? Do you think we'll see any of those today?
-
The plastic back on the 5C is likely made of the same material used on the old Macbooks and iBooks.
-
Heheh, I think so, yup Mark. As for new iPads... well, I think we'll at least get a quick mention and show of them. But I'm not sure that's where Apple's attention is during this event.
-
I agree, Kit, only because we've seen what feels like thousands of leaks (but maybe really just one or two!) of the new hardware. What about anything else? AppleTV?
-
More than 200 features in iOS 7. Developers' apps include OpenTable, Zillow, and NBC. "Great not just on the iPhone, but iPad as well."
-
-
iOS 7 available Sept 18 for iPhone 4 and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad mini, and 5th generation iPod Touch.
-
The most interesting thing to me about iOS7 has been that Apple didn't make the cutoff iPhone 5, or even iPhone 4S, but the iPhone 4. They really want to keep the most current OS running on as many devices as possible--a bit different than Google's approach with Android.

Ha! Apple has found the Holy Grail--sell a colorful iPhone AND sell a colorful case.

It's the Green Goblin phone. Is that a real color?

The phone is green, too: Arsenic-free display, Mercury-free, "and yes, Android-free."
-
Here's the silly part to me. That iPhone 5C price is $99 with contract, no doubt. But the phone service contract is ultimately what costs the consumer the most money. It's an illusion of cheapness.
-
From the iPhone 5C video: Exterior is made of multiple parts reduced to single polycarbonate component with seamless surface. iPhone 5C starts with single piece of polycarbonate with steel-reinforced frame with bespoke assembly that doubles as antenna. Clear lacquer gives it glossiness, contrasted by matted case.
-
The iPhone 5C's case colors match the iOS7 UI perfectly, don't they?
-
$99 is cheap, but many folks outside the U.S. don't have contracts with reduced price phones. The 5C will definitely be cheaper to buy off-contract than a "full" iPhone--and from its $99, we can guess by at least a hundred dollars, possibly more.

"Beautifully, unapologetically plastic," says Cook.
-
Little known fact, that room doubles as Ive's tanning booth.
-
"iPhone 5C is built on foundation of features people know and love," Federighi says in the video. The wallpaper complements the colors of the phone.
-
"It's the vivid realization of hardware and software together in one device."
-
-
"It's the most forward-thinking phone we've ever created."

The plastic is polycarbonate, which is the same material they've been using since iBook G3.

iPhone 5S video shows metallic coming together. Looks like that gold iPhone is real!

I'm really against these cases. They're nice looking but the whole point of a plastic phone is that you shouldn't need to protect it.by Farhad Manjoo via twitter 9/10/2013 5:35:02 PM
